Alternative building styles experience

Postby phil » Thu Feb 18, 2016 5:11 pm

I am looking to expand my knowledge and gain a good inside as to other methods of building. If anyone knows of projects such as load bearing earth rammed walls, Black houses, lime earth works etc. I would be grateful to hear from you

Hello Phil,

One of the best places to start out on your search for this kind of thing is the French website http://www.pierreseche.com which covers a vast range of info on dry-stone and other vernacular building styles much of it in English and all of it seemingly the work of one man, Christian Lassure. Where does he get the time? You can also buy their pamphlet 'Building a dry stone hut' which more or less does what it says on the cover. There is a lot of stuff on the St Kilda cleitean and Blackhouses in there too - again in English. Try http://www.pierreseche.com/sommaire_articles_anglais . The DSWAC Canada built a Blackhouse a few years ago and there are a few photos of it in the DSWAC's website but nothing in any real detail - a pity. Maybe someone out there could put something together. From the days when the DSWA forum actually held host to discussions I got mention of Edward Allens's book Stone Shelters, part travelogue but mostly very accessible academic treatise on the Trulli in Puglia, Italy. This book is a real find but beware, Amazon seem to be selling a photocopied version of it these days. If you google Borut Juvanec, a Croatian architect/academic, you will find a lot on DS building in Croatia much but not all of it in Croatian - but you can get an idea of whats going on and there are plenty of illustrations.

As for rammed earth buildings again just google but I think Low Impact Living Initiative, LILI, based in the English midlands run courses on it as do the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. Try also http://www.thevillage.ie for courses in Tipperary. But it, Cob building, is still a living tradition out west of your way, in Devon I think, houses are still being built of earth and there is an earth building network in Britain, ebuk, who again run a website.

The most entertaining and off the wall source for alternative building has to be the book' Homework Handbuilt Shelter' by Lloyd Kahn. You will never look at a floor plan the same way again after finishing this book!

Good luck.

And for lime, which you also mentioned, you could try http://www.limewindow.wordpress.com or http://www.buildinglimesforumireland.com
