Building a (very small) 'Black House.'

Postby Defender Girl » Sun May 14, 2017 2:47 pm

I am new to drystone walling. Achievements so far: 15 m curved wall & 17 m straight wall built 2015-6.

This year, I would like to build a small black house in my garden - perhaps 4 x 3 m (internal diameter) with curved ends. The walls would be approximately 1.4 m high before a reed type thatch roof is attached. Source stone is field stone with very few 'flat' surfaces. I don't intend having a soil/peat infill as I don't think rounded stones could make an adequate seal to prevent water ingress.

The function of the building is really just for fun or sitting in during the summer evenings. Would anyone have any advice or suggestions for this type of project?

Welcome along and good luck, sounds great.

Things may be a bit quiet here, the days are getting longer and its a flat time here of the forum.

somebody might pop in though, dont expect an answer straight away. There is more discussion about these kinds of things on FB nowadays.

I'm also a hobby drystone builder, I've been away for a while so I didn't see your post. I think it sounds like a great idea, I did a similar thing but built the walls 1.8m tall. the foundations weren't good enough and the stone turned out to not be as durable as the other stones I have used, so it didn't turn out to well, it is in a constant state of repair. 1.4m sounds more practical for a beginner. I think it will look really good, more people should do this sort of thing.
