LIST OF DSW COMPETITIONS 2012

Postby Shirley M Addy » Sat Jun 30, 2012 8:02 am

Yes, I know there's a list of DSW competitions on this website, but I thought a concise listing may be useful for competitive or fun-loving (?) wallers. Here it is - their websites are easy to find in a search:

28 July - Penrith Agricultural Show
4 August - Emley Show
12 August - Trawden Agricultural Show
16 August - Bough Agricultural Show
25 August - Dentdale Show
28 August - Kilnsey Show
29 August - Reeth Show
15 September - Scammonden Water (DSWA West Yorkshire)

As nearly all are part of shows, you can bring your better halves along to admire the cattle and sheep!

Shirley

The Wensleydale Show in on Saturday 25th of August.

This is a small friendly show ideal for a first timer. A stint of 2 metres and £25 for completion of a decent wall, also prize money for the top 3/4 places.

The only problem is poor stone flakey limestone, but it is the same for everyone.

Check out the website

Hope to see you on the day.

I've already booked my place at the Dentdale which is part the Cumbrian Grand Prix, along with Sedbergh (already held), Penrith and Brough comps. I'll try the Wensleydale next year.

Hi there. I have decided to enter the Kilnsey , and the Reeth competition. I have been told by the Reeth secretary, that the entries are done on the day. can any one verify this, as it a long way to go to to find i cant get a place. is it the case with both shows, and are vehicle passes unnecessary.

Hi, I got told the same by the Reeth secretary; however she did not say one CANNOT booking one's entry, so suggest you ask her to confirm that. I've entered Kilnsey too, but not Reeth as it clashes with something else. Best to enter walling comps in good time; that way you get free show tickets (and maybe for guest too) and free parking sent to you.

Phil

I entered the Reeth Show a couple of years ago, you just turn up on the day.

This is a nice little show in a super location dont forget your waterpfroof gear as the weather can be a bit dodgy

Best of luck

How many turned up at Reeth for the competition? I know it's lovely walking countryside over there.

Hi all, it looks as so things are looking up, I have managed to get booked onto local caravan site, the secretary for the Kinsley show is sending me tickets. Whats the stone like in the area, and are cope stones used on the walls, also and how many usually turn up for the events.
By the way, i aim to do both comps, so i should catch up with you, on one or the other.

Hi Phil
How about trying the Dentdale Show on Saturday, 25 August and extend your caravan stay? I've booked with that, but it clashes with the Dufton I think.
It's a while I last walked in Kilnsey but the stone will be limestone.

Aah would love to, but if i spent to long up there, it could become easier to stay, than to come back. maybe next year, with a bigger caravan.
By the way are pins and lines used, or is it all by eye.?

I can't remember whether frames or lines are allowed, but the rules that you should've received with entry form tell you that. Today's Brough comp forbid frames and lines.

Shirley sorry the delay as my broadband has been out of action, the joys of rural living.

6 or 7 wallers entered the Reeth Show but entrants can fluctuate as only 2 of us entered the Wensleydale Show last year.

The Kilnsey Show is a quite a challenging due to the size of stint the stone is lime stone but you will find a few boulders. If you think this is hard have a look at the fell race as the runners run up the side of Kilnsey Cragg.

Best of luck to you and Phil

Les, does that mean you won a prize at the Wensleydale? I'm looking forward to Kilnsey though I'd already suspected that it'd be a challenge, albeit a useful one. Entered five so far and have won something at each! I need to think where to put my three trophies when they've been engraved.

Shirley
At the Wensleydale Show there is a trophy that the winner holds for a year.
Last year I came second or last depending on the saying of the half full or half empty glass. I think we will have a few more wallers entering on Saturday
It might cost you a few bob to get your trophies engraved.

best of luck

I'm a half full pint person. A prize is a prize, regardless of how it was won. You may win first prize (ha! if your glass is half full) or second (if half empty) if everybody else goes to another show on Saturday. There are four comps being held on 25 August - Dent, Malham, Dufton and Wensleydale. Take your pick.
