BEGINNER

Postby wesphillips » Tue Apr 30, 2013 2:05 pm

Hi all

I have just completed a beginners course in dsw held by the COTSWOLD AONB , loved every minute of the weekend, have booked onto the follow up course in September and hoping to do my LANTRA 1 in 2014.
I was wondering if there were any wallers in the cotswold area (witney, burford) that would be willing to allow me to join them to gain a little experience .
willing to help in anyway , labouring, tidying up or just spend a day with them to see how they go about things

many thanks

Yes, welcome along,

I think I might be a bit too far away from you down here, glad you enjoyed the course, was it the one held in Bath?

Nigel.

And returned Wes, I have a daywork gig at the moment that means I have plenty of time to share( he made 100 notes on me today) so you can learn rather than do donkey work, OK

I would like this subject to carry a little "air time" so I have asked Wes to report back on his time with me (good or bad), I also told him the fact that many say they can wall but few can, so I gave him a location here for pics of my work( sadly I cannot show pace), but I know nothing of lantra 1', I can put him several rungs up a walling ladder, but what is the test??

Kev, it is :
"Each candidate to strip down and rebuild a straight-forward section of wall totalling 2.5 square metres within a seven hour period. Work to be done in the presence of the Examiner".

You can find all the detail from the home page here, go to 'Training' then 'Craftsman Certification Scheme'. Then finally click the highlighted link in the text to obtain the 'Craftsman Certification Scheme Booklet'.

I have just finished spending a few hours with Kev his Dad and his Daughter.
really enjoyed the time i spent with them and learnt a lot from Kev, managed to tap into the years of knowledge he has walling and hope to put that into practice as I get more experience in handling the stone and walling in general.

It was nice that Kev let me do my own thing working along side him and just pulled me up if i didn't pick the right stone or he found a better fit.
I am one of those people who learn best by getting out there and doing the job and this chance Kev has given me today will last a lifetime

really, really appreciate the chance to spend the time with him, smashing bloke and someone I hope to stay in touch with

Good to see pro walkers encouraging others into walling! Well done! Re the Lantra course, I'm half way through my level one and have my first "speed test" this week. I know I can wall BUT I"m not sure I'm quick enough yet! Ah well, we'll see! The exam itself is strip and rebuild 2.5 metres n 7 hours as Tracey said. I'm looking forward to it but I'm also wondering if I can manage it! I'll let you know how I get on!
