earth backed stone walls safety inquiry

dear all, if earth is on top of a wall in parts, which is backed by earth ,the wall being as tall as half a man ,does it make it more sound if i take earth off it?thankyou for your replys.will try to put photos on tommorow

Hi Caroline,

I would say it depends on the condition of the retaining wall. At half a man high, if the wall is in good condition you shoukld be ok. A picture will give better indication. An option would be a take down of wall, retain with blockwork, and face with dry stone. I have used this method to great success in the past on high retaining walls.

If the soil on top of the wall is actually turf, then it may be acting in the same way as a turf coping and binding the top together.
